Question:

89 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the once off special grants that were allocated by his Department in 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3254/96]

Tógfaidh mé Ceist Uimh. 21 agus Ceist scríofa Uimh. 89 le chéile.

The Deputy will be aware that my Department and bodies under its aegis covers a very wide spectrum of activities. The projects supported are many and varied and attract grants over a wide range of amounts. They include grants paid to our national cultural institutions, to cultural and Irish language bodies, to Gaeltacht residents, bodies etc. under various schemes, grants for the promotion of the arts, our heritage, industrial development etc. The work entailed in compiling minute details of each and every one of these projects could not be justified having regard to the time it would take and the expense involved.

I might add that some of the information being sought by the Deputy will be available in the 1995 Appropriation Account and in the 1995 annual reports of some of the bodies under the aegis of my Department.

Godfrey Timmins

Question:

23 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the applications, if any, he has received over the past three years for cultural and heritage grants from groups in Waterford city and county; the grants that have been awarded on foot of these applications; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3217/96]

The cultural development incentive scheme, 1994-99, is the only scheme being operated by my Department under which discretionary moneys are available for capital investment in cultural projects. A total of 170 applications were received by me under this scheme and, of these, five applications were received from Waterford city and county. These projects are; Dungarvan Cultural Centre, County Waterford; Garter Lane Arts Centre, Waterford city; Waterford Theatre Royal, Waterfore city; Cultúrlann na Rinne, An Rinn, Contae Phort Láirge; Sean Choirce Teoranta, Heritage Centre, Dungarvan, County Waterford.

No decisions have yet been made with regard to projects to which funding will be offered under this scheme. However, I expect to be in a position to announce my initial decisions under the scheme very soon.

With regard to projects relating to the physical heritage, details of applications received from groups in Waterford city and county and of grants which, following my approval, were awarded in the period from January 1993 to 9 July 1995 by the former non-statutory National Heritage Council are listed in the following table, which will be circulated in the Official Report. The new Heritage Council, which I appointed on 10 July 1995 under the Heritage Act, 1995, is an autonomous statutory body whose functions include powers to provide assistance including financial assistance and advice to persons and bodies in matters relating to its functions. A detailed list of any grants approved or paid by the statutory Heritage Council since 10 July 1995 will be published in due course in its annual reports for 1995 and 1996.
