Vol. 461 No. 5

Written Answers. - French Visitors to Ireland.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

60 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Taoiseach the estimated number of visitors from France to Ireland in each of the last five years; and the number of Irish people who visited France in each of the last five years. [3303/96]

The information requested by the Deputy, in relation to visitors from France, is set out below. Official data relating to the number of Irish people who visited France are not available from CSO sources.

Estimated number of visitors from France to Ireland in each of the years 1991 to 1995: 1991, 219,000; 1992, 217,000; 1993, 238,000; 1994, 230,000; 1995, 232,000. These estimates are based on a large sample "Country of Residence" survey of passengers carried out by the Central Statistics Office at major air and sea ports which are used in conjunction with total passenger movement figures supplied by the transport companies to provide estimates of all visits by non-residents to Ireland.
