Vol. 461 No. 6

Written Answers. - Waste Minimisation Policy.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

46 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment his views as to whether the private sector will only involve itself in re-use or recycling technology where markets exist for the end products; and the plans, if any, he has to provide incentives for waste minimisation strategies which are not market driven. [3366/96]

Policy in relation to waste minimisation, reuse and recycling relies on a combination of market driven and grant-assisted measures. Examples of the latter include the scheme of recycling grants, now being significantly increased, as well as the assistance available through the Operational Programme for Environmental Services for Research and Development activity related to clean technology and other areas relevant to environmental protection.
