Vol. 461 No. 7

Written Answers. - AWEPA Initiative.

Tom Kitt

Question:

111 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs whether he will support the initiative proposed by AWEPA, European Parliamentarians for Africa, to co-ordinate a peace mission to Belfast, Dublin and London comprising of a multi party delegation of political leaders from South Africa. [3655/96]

The Government welcomes international support for the peace process. I believe that there is much that can be learned from the exchange of information and experiences of conflict resolution in other areas of the world.

I welcome AWEPA's efforts to draw on the South African experience of peaceful transition to democracy in order to contribute to the realisation of a peaceful settlement in Northern Ireland. The Irish Government is willing to assist, as far as practicable, AWEPA during its planned visit to Dublin and I am examining their request for a financial contribution towards the cost of the visit.
