Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - Prison Uniforms.

Ivor Callely

Question:

123 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the consideration, if any, that has been given to the issue of marked prison uniforms to all prisoners while in custody; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3980/96]

I have no plans to introduce a marked prison uniform for offenders in custody.

Offenders who are committed to prison on remand or on conviction are allowed, by and large, to wear their own clothes, subject to certain conditions, including that of obtaining the relevant Governor's permission. Standard issue clothing is also available for both categories of offenders, if required.
