Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - Estreatment of Bail.

John Browne

Question:

36 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Justice the total amount of money which was paid to the State in 1995 by persons who acted as sureties for accused persons who failed to honour the terms of their bail. [3817/96]

The only records which are readily available relate to orders made for the estreatment of bail in the Dublin Metropolitan District Court and bail estreated and realised in the Dublin Circuit Court, the Central Criminal Court and the Special Criminal Court. Bail may be in the form of cash or sureties and orders made for the estreatment of sureties may not always be realised.

The total value of orders made for the estreatment of bail in the Dublin Metropolitan District Court and the total value of bail estreated in the Dublin Circuit Court, the Central Criminal Court and the Special Criminal Court in 1995 was as follows:

The compilation of the information in relation to all other court offices could only be done by the allocation of scarce resources at the expense of other important tasks.
The values of orders made for the estreatment of bail in the Dublin Metropolitan District Court can be broken down as follows: sureties, £17,800; cash estreatment, £49,005; principal party, £5,650.
The bail estreated in the Special Criminal Court was on foot of a surety given to the court.
