Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - Petition Statistics.

Denis Foley

Question:

50 Mr. Foley asked the Minister for Justice the number of petitions, if any, opened in her Department for the mitigation of fines imposed by the courts; and when decisions will be forthcoming in relation to these petitions. [3828/96]

There are 4,208 petitions currently on hand and they will be considered in the light of new guidelines and procedures which are at present being formulated to take account of a 1995 High Court judgement on petitions.

As I have already indicated on a number of occasions, and most recently by way of written answer to Parliamentary Question No. 66 on 25 January 1996 the new guidelines and procedures will be announced when finalised.
