Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - Debtors (Ireland) Act.

Seán Doherty

Question:

62 Mr. Doherty asked the Minister for Justice the status of her examination of the Debtors (Ireland) Act; when she expects to bring forward proposals for legislative change; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3823/96]

I refer the Deputy to my response to Question No. 163 of 20 June 1995 in which I indicated that I was reviewing the whole question of the payment of debts and fines and, in particular, examining a system of attachment of income where a court could order fines or debts to be deducted from a person's income. That review is continuing and, when my examination of all the issues is complete, I will bring before Government whatever legislative changes which I may consider necessary.
