Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tax Penalty Payments.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

79 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance if he will confirm media reports that a sum of £100,000 was made available as a reward for information in connection with the tax penalty payment made by a company (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3961/96]

As the Deputy will be aware, the Revenue Commissioners are precluded under normal confidentiality obligations from disclosing details relating to any particular case.

As regards the general position on rewards, I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that their authority to pay a monetary reward to informants is used from time to time subject to stringent controls and authorisation procedures. While the amount of any reward payment would be related to a variety of factors, the Revenue Commissioners have informed me that no rewards anywhere near the figure referred to by the Deputy have been paid in any case.
