Vol. 462 No. 1

Written Answers. - Anonymous Letters.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

67 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the standard procedures operated when his office or the office of the Minister(s) of State at his Department receives an anonymous letter; and if he has satisfied himself with the procedures that currently operate. [4098/96]

There is no standard procedure for dealing with anonymous letters. Any action taken is determined by the content and context of such letters. All signed letters received in my office or the offices of the Ministers of State in the Department of Foreign Affairs or the office of the Tánaiste are, of course, acknowledged and as appropriate, acted on.

Question:

68 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance the standard procedures operated when his office or the office of the Minister(s) of State at his Department receives an anonymous letter; and if he has satisfied himself with the procedures that currently operate. [4099/96]

There are no prescribed uniform procedures for the treatment of anonymous correspondence received in my office or those of the Ministers of State at my Department. The action taken varies according to the content and nature of the correspondence. I am satisfied that the procedures for dealing with anonymous correspondence are appropriate.
