Vol. 462 No. 2

Written Answers. - Drug Treatment Facilities.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

98 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Health when locally based drug treatment facilities will be extended; where they will be extended; the consultation, if any, that will take place with local communities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4493/96]

Limerick East): The provision of additional treatment services for drug misusers in the Eastern Health Board is a matter for the board in the first instance. Arising from the Government decision of 20 February 1996, additional resources will be made available to enable the board to expand the places available at its range of community drug treatment centres in 1996. The development of these centres will be in areas of greatest need in Dublin and the pace of such development will depend on the extent to which local communities cooperate with their development. The board has been requested to ensure that the development of these centres is handled with the utmost sensitivity and the fullest of consultation with local communities.
