Vol. 462 No. 4

Written Answers. - Irradiated Foodstuffs.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

60 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health the percentage of foodstuffs on the Irish market that have been irradiated; and the specific foods which have come within this irradiated percentage. [4759/96]

Foostsuffs of Irish origin on the Irish market are not irradiated.

Under the terms of EU Directive 89/395, pre-packed foodstuffs which have been irradiated are required to indicate this in the labelling. It is not possible, however, to identify other foods in this manner.

Data on the actual percentage of foodstuffs and on the specific foods that have been irradiated are not available although I understand that the amount is quite small.
