Written Answers. - Use of Clenbuterol.

Eoin Ryan

Question:

105 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of cases involving the illegal use of angel dust awaiting a court hearing; the number of prosecutions; and the number of convictions obtained to date. [4738/96]

The Regulations banning clenbuterol, the European Communities (Control of Veterinary Medicinal Products and their Residues) Regulations, 1990, came into force on 13 July 1990. Since then, 15 persons have been convicted of offences relating to the use or possession of the drug and charges against three persons were struck out by the District Court. Criminal proceedings have been initiated in a further 87 cases and four cases are in preparation in my Department.
