Vol. 462 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ballycotton (Cork) Coast Erosion.

Máirín Quill

Question:

111 Miss Quill asked the Minister for the Marine whether an official assessment has been carried out into the storm damage and coastal erosion in the Ballycotton area, County Cork with a view to submitting an application for EU funding to remedy this situation. [4729/96]

The undertaking of any assessment of erosion and storm damage is in the first instance a matter for the relevant local authority. In this case, that is Cork County Council.

As I have previously indicated to this House, Cork County Council has advised the Department of the Marine of their top four priority proposals for coastal protection. These proposals include works at Ballycotton. However, a detailed submission outlining fully costed, designed and justified proposals is awaited. When this is received full consideration will be given to the inclusion of the proposals under the European Union Funded Operational Programme for Environmental Services 1994-1999. Under this Programme some £5.2 million is available for all coastal protection works over the 1994 through 1999 period. There is no fund for storm damage under the Programme.
