Vol. 462 No. 5

Written Answers. - Placing of Dublin Pupil.

Liam Fitzgerald

Question:

163 Mr. L. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to have a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5, currently attending St. Laurence O'Toole special school, Dublin 1 placed in a second level school for the school year autumn 1996 to summer 1997 with a view to the student pursuing a course for the group certificate; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4812/96]

I am aware of the case referred to by the Deputy. The selection and enrolment of pupils in second level schools is in the first instance the responsibility of individual schools. In cases such as this, my Department's inspectorate endeavours, by a process of consultation with school management, to have the pupil in question placed in a school in his locality where the normal examination syllabus is followed. These efforts, which by their nature can take some time, are ongoing in this case and every effort is being made to find an appropriate placement.

I shall advise the Deputy of any development.
