Dáil Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 5 Mar 1996

Vol. 462 No. 5

Requests to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal separately with two notices under Standing Order 30 on two different topics. I shall call on Members in the order in which they submitted their requests, the first being Deputy Martin.

I seek to move the Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30 to discuss the need for a thorough debate on the major errors uncovered in relation to the operation of the 1995 leaving certificate art examination and the failure of the Minister for Education to be fully accountable to this House thereon; in addition to seeking an explanation for the delay——

I must ask the Deputy to confine his statement to the matter submitted to the Ceann Comhairle's office.

——in responding to correspondence submitted by parents of students in St. Mary's School in Dundalk concerning the marking of the honours leaving certificate English paper in 1995. Having written in October 1995 it took a number of months for the Minister to reply, their first contact with her Department having been 9 February 1996.

The matter, having been fully considered, is not deemed to be one contemplated under Standing Order 30. Therefore, leave cannot be granted to move the motion.

I seek to move the Adjournment of Dáil to discuss the mishandling of the Telecome Éireann sale of shares negotiations by the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications following the recent withdrawal by British Telecom from the process, brought about by the Minister's total inactivity and complete mishandling of the process.

The matter, having been fully considered, is not deemed to be one contemplated under Standing Order 30 and, therefore, leave cannot be granted to move the motion.
