Question:

102 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health the number of applications that were received for the vacant general practitioner's position under the general medical service scheme in Castlebar, County Mayo; the number of applicants, male and female; and the person who was the successful applicant. [4921/96]

Limerick East): I propose to take Questions No. 101 and 102 together.

The arrangements for the provision of a general practitioner service for eligible persons, under the general medical services scheme, are a matter for the chief executive officer of the relevant health board.

I have had inquiries made of the chief executive officer of the Western Health Board and I have been informed that there are eight general practitioners in Castlebar who are in the GMS scheme. Of these, seven are male and one is female.

I am also informed that the health board received a total of twenty-two applications for the general practitioner vacancy in the GMS scheme in Castlebar. Of these, sixteen were male and six were female. I also understand that the board is currently finalising arrangements for the filling of this position and that it expects to make an appointment in the near future.
