The provision of a new 600-pupil community college under the aegis of City of Dublin vocational education committee on the Waterford St. site is part of my strategy to address educational disadvantage in the north inner city area. Other measures in this strategy include a pilot scheme of teacher counsellors and an anti-drugs programme.
The college will provide mainstream second-level courses, as well as special programmes in the areas of remedial, adult and community education.
Architectural planning of the project will commence this year and the intention is that the new school building will be ready for occupation by September 1998.
The existing vocational schools at North Strand and Parnell Square will be absorbed into the community college.
