Vol. 462 No. 7

Written Answers. - Departmental Priorities.

Ivor Callely

Question:

67 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the legislative and administrative priorities of his Department in 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5274/96]

The present legislative priorities for my Department, on which work is progressing or which are currently before the Oireachtas, are as follows: Administrative Procedures Bill, Borrowing Powers of Certain Companies and Other Bodies Bill, Bretton Woods Agreement (Amendment) Bill, Central Bank Bill, Civil Service Regulation (Amendment) Bill, Finance Bill, Investor Compensation Bill, Ministers and Secretaries (Amendment) Bill, Ombudsman (Amendment) Bill, Privilege and Compellability of Witnesses Bill and Valuation Bill.

In terms of administrative priorities for my Department in 1996, I am particularly anxious to continue the implementation of the Department's strategic management initiative to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Department and to encourage the deepening of the SMI process throughout the Civil Service. This includes the introduction of a multi-annual budget process, as outlined in the budget. I am also particularly committed to ensuring that my Department plays a prominent role in achieving a successful Irish Presidency of the European Union in the second half of the year.
