Vol. 462 No. 7

Written Answers. - Dún Laoghaire (Dublin) Drugs Treatment Centre.

David Andrews

Question:

71 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to a proposal by the Eastern Health Board to site a drugs treatment centre at Centenary House, York Road, Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin, which is right in the middle of a residential area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5395/96]

Limerick East): The Eastern Health Board, which is responsible for the provision of drug prevention services, proposes to develop community drug services in the Dún Laoghaire area in 1996. This will enhance the limited service already provided in the area through two existing addiction counsellors. These services will be provided to people who reside in the Dún Laoghaire area only.

It is the absolute intention of the Eastern Health Board to consult fully with local political and community representatives regarding the need for services in the area and regarding how such services may best be provided. At all stages in this process the interests of the community as a whole will be carefully considered.

No specific location for these services has yet been decided and a statement has been issued by the board to this effect. In particular, no decision has been taken in relation to Centenary House and any use of this premises for any purpose will be the subject of the consultative process.
