Dermot Ahern

Question:

80 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment the number of times the Government sub-committee on the nuclear industry has met; the action, if any, that has been taken on any of its recommendations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5403/96]

The ministerial group in Sellafield and the Irish Sea has met on three occasions to date under my chairmanship and assists in monitoring and coordinating relevant strategies to be pursused by individual Ministers or their respective Departments.

A range of actions has been taken in relation to the group's recommendations, as detailed in the replies to Questions Nos. 11, 17, 18 and 27 of 12 October 1995; to Questions Nos. 15, 19, 30 and 80 of the same date; to Question No. 43 of 12 December 1995; and to Questions Nos. 137, 138 and 139 of 14 February 1996.

The ministerial group will continue its strategic role in relation to the important commitments on the Irish Sea and Sellafield in A Government of Renewal.
