218 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the total cost of issuing standard issue clothing to remand and convicted prisoners in 1995; the make and cloth of such clothing; the average individual cost of each item; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5735/96]
Offenders who are committed to prison on remand or on conviction are allowed, by and large, to wear their own clothes. Most prisoners in custody avail of this facility.
The standard items of clothing on issue to male and female prisoners, the type of material used in such clothing and the current cost of each item are as set out in the following schedule. In addition, suitable clothing is issued, as appropriate, for specific purposes including physical education and work training.
Total expenditure in 1995 on all prisoner clothing was £540,580. This includes male and female clothing and underclothing, gym and work clothing, towelling and safety clothing.
