Vol. 462 No. 8

Written Answers. - Shannon Casino Proposal.

Tony Killeen

Question:

36 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Finance his views on the Shannon Airport Task Force proposal which recommends siting a casino near the airport; and when he expects to introduce legislation to provide for casinos. [4407/96]

As I previously indicated to the House, the Government has asked my Department to prepare a report, in consultation with the other Government Departments and agencies involved, on the pros and cons of licensing casino gaming.

The bodies involved are considering such matters as the social aspects of casino gaming, the revenue implications and the possible regulatory framework. Should a decision to allow casino gaming be taken, legislation would be necessary, and this is also one of the matters being considered by the group.

The Deputy will appreciate that until the Government has had an opportunity to give consideration to the matter generally, the question of examination of individual casino proposals does not arise.
