Vol. 463 No. 1

Adjournment Debate. - Dromahair (Leitrim) School Accommodation.

Thank you for allowing me to raise on the Adjournment the matter of St. Joseph's national school, Killenummery, Dromahair. At this stage, the Minister of State is aware of the problems at this school. An application was made to upgrade the toilets in the school, which was sanctioned by the Department in September 1995, but this is only a small section of the work required.

There are problems with regard to the condition of the windows, the provision of toilet accommodation for the teacher and of hot and cold water. The windows and doors are defective and causing draughts. A number of floors in the school need to be replaced. In addition, there are problems relating to desks, chairs and general school furniture. A major problem exists in terms of the playing facilities. Part of the green area attached to the school was fenced off because it was waterlogged and in a dangerous condition.

Will the Minister and her Department sanction the proposed renovations suggested by the board of management and the school's manager. It is important sanction is given immediately so that the work can be done during the forthcoming summer holidays. I hope the Minister will give favourable consideration to this matter because nobody can expect pupils and teachers to work in the type of conditions in this school. I hope she will be in a position to allow the board of management and the manager to proceed with bringing this school up to a condition suitable for pupils in 1996.

I am glad Deputy Ellis has given me the opportunity to outline to the House my Department's current position in respect of St. Joseph's national school, Killenummery, Dromahair, County Leitrim.

I am aware the school has a current staffing level of principal and two assistant teachers and an enrolment of 57 pupils. The accommodation consists of two permanent classrooms and a prefabricated classroom. I am aware that the accommodation and facilities are less than satisfactory.

In May 1994 the school authorities requested grand-aid towards the cost of upgrading the sanitary facilities. My Department's professional advisers recommended a new toilet block at an estimated cost of £16,000. In September 1995 my Department sanctioned grant-aid of £13,600 towards the cost of these works. The Deputy will appreciate that they require full planning permission and approval from the fire authority. It is expected that tenders will be invited for these works by April.

My Department has recently received a request for grant assistance towards the cost of further improvements at this school. The matter was referred to my Department's technical advisers, the Office of Public Works, for a report. On receipt of this report a decision regarding grant assistance will be conveyed to the school authorities in the light of available financial resources.

Finally, I wish to assure the Deputy that my Department appreciates the concerns expressed by the school authorities. The Deputy can be assured of my desire to see an improvement in conditions at the school and I thank him again for the opportunity to outline the position.
