56 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health his views on the benefit of research and development work undertaken by drug companies, particularly to explore new areas of benefit to patients and patient care; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5812/96]

Limerick East): The contribution made by the pharmaceutical industry, through research and development, to the improvement of patient care arising from the introduction of innovative therapeutic regimes is fully recognised. The need to ensure that these beneficial medicines are made available to patients in the most cost-effective way is also recognised.
