Vol. 463 No. 4

Written Answers. - Disabled Person's Grant Assistance.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

97 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment if he will provide extra funding to local authorities for those families who have a young disabled adult in the family and thus have to extend their houses to facilitate them. [6664/96]

Local authorities finance the disabled person's grants scheme from their own internal resources, by borrowing from the Housing Finance Agency, or a combination of these sources. Authorities recoup from my Department half their grant expenditure, subject to a maximum recoupment of £4,000 per grant aid. There are no proposals to increase this limit or to alter the funding arrangements. The 1996 capital allocations for local authority house purchase and improvement loans and disabled persons and essential repairs grants will be notified to individual authorities in the near future. The allocations will be on the basis of the amounts sought by each authority.
