Vol. 463 No. 4

Written Answers. - Proposed Standardisation of Motor Vehicles.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

101 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, he has for the standardisation on motor vehicles of gears, indicators, wipers and other devices in the interest of safety; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6106/96]

As this is fundamentally a question of vehicle design, it falls to be dealt with in the context of the EU motor vehicle type approval system; Ireland's input to this is dealt with by the Department of Enterprise and Employment. Unilateral action in such matters is not feasible because of EU requirements on type approval and barriers to trade.
