Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Provision of Newspapers and Magazines to Prisons.

Ivor Callely

Question:

223 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the total cost for supply of newspapers and magazines to prisons in 1995; the magazines and newspapers that were provided; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6981/96]

Prisoners may purchase newspapers and magazines at their own expense. Newspapers and magazines however are purchased for official purposes as is the practice in the rest of the Civil Service. In addition, newspapers and magazines are purchased for use in prison libraries' education units as part of literacy and reading programmes—these incorporate reading material for all levels of literacy. The total cost to the Exchequer for the supply of newspapers and magazines to prisons in 1995 was £13,085.

The following is a list of the newspapers and magazines which were provided during 1995:

The Irish Times, Irish Independent, The Irish Press, Daily Mirror, The Star, English Independent, The Guardian, The Cork Examiner, Evening Herald, Anois, Sunday Independent, The Sunday Press, The Sunday Tribune, Sunday World, RTE Guide, Radio Times, TV Times, Computer Magazine, Computer Scope, Technology Ireland, Woodworker Monthly, Health and Fitness, Ultra Fit, Smash Hits, Woman's Way, ‘19’, Ireland's Eye, Ireland's Own, Amateur Photography, Hogan Stand, The Farmers' Journal, Practical Photography, Treasure of the Earth, Garden and Answers, Dandy and the Beano.
