Vol. 464 No. 1

Written Answers. - Training and Employment Schemes.

Ivor Callely

Question:

19 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the number of persons enrolled in training/employment schemes in 1995; the comparative figures for each of the years 1984, 1987, 1990 and 1993; the evaluation of such schemes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7597/96]

The information requested by the Deputy is set out in the form of two tabular statements which follow. I should mention that, in addition to the various evaluations included in the relevant tabular statement, FÁS regularly reviews its programmes in order to optimize their effectiveness and seeks the assistance of outside agencies from time to time where this is deemed necessary. Such reviews are, of course, a day to day matter for FÁS.

* Figures in respect of 1987 and 1990 reflect numbers on the Social Employment Scheme; figures in respect of 1993 reflect numbers on the Social Employment Scheme/Community Employment Development Programme/Teamwork (the SES/CEDP/Teamwork preceded Community Employment).
† These figures represent throughput — recruitment figures are unavailable.
The figures above refer to persons who commenced on FÁS programmes during 1995. They do not take account of drop-outs during the year (e.g. the Deputy will be aware that almost 40,000 people were participating on Community Employment at the end of 1995).
