Vol. 464 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pharmaceutical and Biotechnological Sector.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

38 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the concerns, if any, he has at the lack of investment in this country during the past five years from the pharmaceutical and the biotechnological multinational sector; and the proposals, if any, he has to improve the situation. [5936/96]

Substantial investment has taken place in the pharmaceutical and biotechnological multinational sector in this country since 1990. An estimated £800 million has been invested here by overseas industry in respect of industry expansions and new greenfield projects; employment has increased by 3,000 and now exceeds 8,000 in this sector.

IDA Ireland continues to promote actively the development and expansion of this sector which provides high quality, well paid, sustainable jobs. The announcement last week by Gaeleo Ltd., Cork of a major £45 million IDA-supported expansion with an additional 150 new jobs is particularly welcome.
