Vol. 464 No. 2

Written Answers. - Food Safety Policy.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

142 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the plans, if any, he has to set up an independent statutory food safety council in view of the sudden proliferation of food safety boards and the general scepticism of the public to their pronouncements. [7907/96]

There is only one statutory board concerned with food safety at national level, that is, the Food Safety Advisory Board which advises the Minister for Health and, at his request, the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

The existing arrangements for food safety are being examined at present by an interdepartmental committee under the chairmanship of the Department of Finance.
