Question:

35 Mr. Nolan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of animals slaughtered in each of the last five years; and the amount of compensation paid in each of the last five years. [7830/96]

It is assumed that the Deputy is referring to compensation paid in relation to BSE, where it is the Department's policy to depopulate the entire herd in which a case of the disease occurs. A total of 124 cases of BSE have occurred in Ireland since the first case was confirmed in 1989. The number of animals slaughtered under this policy in each of the last five years and the amount of compensation paid is as follows:
