Vol. 464 No. 3

Written Answers. - Grants Payments Delay.

Joe Walsh

Question:

133 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total number of farmers awaiting first and second REP scheme payments; and the current delay period for those awaiting their first and second payments. [8236/96]

The number of farmers awaiting first year payments is 2,976 and the number of farmers now due second year payments under REPS is 1,937. However, only 467 have applied for the payment to date.

Due to the high level of deficient plans submitted during the first year of the scheme more detailed checking of applications is now being carried out before payments are made. This has led to some delays but I am seeking to ensure that these are minimised. The increased level of inspections is necessary to ensure compliance with the terms of the scheme.

Compliance checks will also be required to ensure that farmers have completed the specific works outlined during the first year of the plan.
