Vol. 464 No. 3

Written Answers. - Irish Life Redundancies.

Brendan Kenneally

Question:

45 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for Finance the assurances, if any, that were given that there will be no enforced redundancies in Irish Life PLC on its privatisation; whether this commitment is being monitored by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8224/96]

When announcing the proposed restructuring and flotation of Irish Life in March 1990, the then Minister for Finance referred to the assurances given by the company that job numbers would not be affected in the restructuring. With regard to future employment prospects the company made it clear at the time that this would depend, as with any company, private or public sector, on its commercial success.

I am informed by Irish Life that there have been no enforced redundancies in its Irish operations since the company's restructuring and flotation in July 1991.

In so far as the Deputy's question relates to the current staff dispute in Irish Life, I understand from the company that discussions are in train regarding the restructuring of the sales organisation and that jobs will be made available to all affected staff.
