Question:

101 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the level and nature of support provided by her Department or by bodies under the aegis of her Department for youth community-based activities in disadvantaged areas; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8189/96]

The youth affairs section of my Department administers a scheme of grants in respect of special out-of-school projects for disadvantaged young people. Priority is given to projects in the areas of community-based youth work initiatives, young homeless people, young substance abusers and young travellers. Grants are allocated to organisations and groups for specific projects which seek to address the development needs of young people who are disadvantaged due to a range of socio-economic factors. In 1995, a total of £6,032 million was made available through vocational education committees and voluntary organisations under the Grant Scheme for Special Projects to assist Disadvantaged Youth.
