Michael Bell

Question:

129 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the number of combat suits issued to members of the FCA and Slua Muirí, by Command, as at 30 March 1996; the number that will be issued by 30 September 1996; and if he will make a statement regarding the issue of weather protective clothing. [8330/96]

Arrangements were recently made for the introduction on a phased basis of a new combat dress for all FCA members. A provision of £720,000 has been included in the 1996 Defence Estimate to meet the cost of phase one which will involve the issue of 7,000 suits to FCA members with a minimum of one year's service who have a satisfactory attendance record. It is anticipated that the first phase will be completed by 30 September 1996.

Weather-protective clothing for members of the FCA is included in the new clothing schedules issued recently.

The foregoing information has been collated pursuant to a similar question by the Deputy on 16 April, 1996, in respect of an 18 month period.
The quality of both working dress and No. 1 uniforms issued to members of the FCA and Slua Muiri over the last 12 months is similar in every respect to the clothing issued to members of the Permanent Defence Forces and is considered satisfactory.
Further issues of full No. 1 uniforms and footwear will be made over the period to the end of December 1996, in accordance with schedules and entitlements as laid down in Defence Force regulations and Quartermaster General's instructions.
