Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 20 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Kirk — the need to examine the allocation under the EU peace initiative with a view to having more resources made available for industrial development in the Border counties; (2) Deputy Shortall — the need to tackle illegal drug dealers by establishing a special unit involving the Garda Síochána, the Revenue Commissioners and the Department of Social Welfare; (3) Deputy Mary Wallace — the imminent loss of the basic personal assistance service by a number of people (details supplied) with significant disabilities; (4) Deputy Costello — the need to expedite the transfer of Irish prisoners under the Transfer of Sentenced Persons Act, 1995; (5) Deputy Deasy — the need to progress the permanent extension which has been approved for St. Declan's Community College, Kilmacthomas, County Waterford, in view of the anticipated major additional intake of students in September 1996; (6) Deputy Michael Ahern — the inadequacy of the water reservoir facilities at Cobh, County Cork; (7) Deputy Ó Cuív — the need for a structural and safety assessment of, and for the necessary moneys to be made available for the pier at Cleggan, County Galway, and the need for official recognition of the pier as a fishing port and a ferry port; (8) Deputy Tom Kitt — the need to intervene in the industrial dispute involving postal workers who have been suspended over recruitment; (9) Deputy Leonard — the need for a review of the alternative farm enterprise schemes; (10) Deputy Coughlan — the delay in sanctioning funding for the proposed extension to St. Brigid's national school, Convoy, County Donegal; (11) Deputy Quill — the recent report which confirms that unemployment in Cork North-Central rose by 2 per cent in the past 12 months and the reason unemployment in this constituency is against the national trend; (12) Deputy Noel Ahern — the concern of landlords with the Housing (Registration of Rented Houses) Regulations, 1996; (13) Deputy Eric Byrne — the urgent need to establish a special Garda task force to co-ordinate the investigations into the recent gangland killings in Dublin; (14) Deputy Lynch — the need to ensure that history remains compulsory for junior certificate students; (15) Deputy Brendan Smith — the need to approve the proposal by Cavan County Council to provide a new branch library at Cootehill: (16) Deputy Haughey — the work-to-rule in the headquarters and financial services division of An Post, the proposed strike action and the recent suspension of staff.

The matters raised by Deputies Mary Wallace, Coughlan, Kirk and Leonard have been selected for discussion.
