73 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Minister for Health the reason elderly medical card patients have to pay their general practitioners for the examination required in order to renew a driving licence. [8466/96]

, Limerick East): The terms of the General Medical Services contract, which govern the provision of general practitioner services for medical card patients are the subject of negotiation and agreement with the Irish Medical Organisation.

The terms of the contract specifically exclude payment to the doctor for services related to the provision of certificates for driving licences, insurance and assurance policies as well as certain certificates related to social welfare schemes.
