Vol. 464 No. 6

Written Answers. - Adoption Tracing Procedures.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

99 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health the procedures open to an Irish woman (details supplied) in County Dublin wishing to trace a daughter who was born 19 years ago and given up for adoption. [8787/96]

A party to a legal adoptation should approach the agency which arranged the adoption. Where circumstances permit, an adoption agency will do what it can to facilitate contact by mutual voluntary consent provided it is satisfied, through counselling, that both parties are fully cognisant of the considerations and implications involved in such a step. If the agency is not known or is no longer in existence the applicant should approach the Adoption Board for assistance.

One of my priorities in the area of adoption is the establishment of a national contact register to assist adopted persons and birth parents who wish to re-establish contact with one another.
