Vol. 465 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Housing.

Ivor Callely

Question:

126 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment if he has satisfied himself with all aspects of the plan for social housing; the concerns, if any, he has regarding the shared ownership scheme, particularly in the Dublin area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9289/96]

The policy document Social Housing — The Way Ahead, published in May 1995 and supplied to each Deputy, contained a detailed review of progress under the plan for social housing. It also introduced changes in the full range of social housing schemes, including the shared ownership system, in order to make them more effective in meeting needs. Social housing provision in 1995 catered for the needs of 9,934 households, thus exceeding the projection contained in Social Housing — The Way Ahead.

The administration of the shared ownership system, including the processing of applications, is the responsibility of housing authorities. In 1995, 712 transactions were completed under the system by the Dublin authorities compared to 616 in 1994.
