Vol. 465 No. 3

Written Answers. - Training on Learning Disabilities.

Micheál Martin

Question:

140 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education whether she will enter into discussions with the teacher training colleges to ensure that prospective primary school teachers will be trained to recognise the symptoms of specific learning disabilities, such as dyslexia in children. [9439/96]

I understand that trainee teachers in the colleges of education for primary teachers receive training on specific learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, in general pre-service courses on reading problems, disabilities and remediation.

Also, in the case of in-service remedial education courses provided by those colleges, my Department has drawn the attention of the colleges to the need to provide training for dealing with reading problems, such as dyslexia.
