Vol. 465 No. 3

Written Answers. - Community Services Submission.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

185 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Justice if she will review a submission (details supplied) by the Athlone Community Services Council in County Westmeath with a view to using this very developmental idea as a pilot project for helping elderly people. [9488/96]

Last March, the Minister for Social Welfare secured the approval of the Government for his proposals in relation to the recommendations of the task force on security for the elderly.

One of these recommendations provides that resources be made available to voluntary groups to support the installation of security equipment and alarm monitoring devices in the homes of elderly people who are identified as at risk and that this be done through a scheme operated on the lines of the scheme of grants for voluntary and community groups operated by the Department of Social Welfare.

In the circumstances, I would suggest that the group concerned bring their submission to the attention of the Department of Social Welfare.
