Vol. 465 No. 3

Written Answers. - Youth Services.

Brendan Smith

Question:

35 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Education the new initiatives, if any, in respect of youth services, that will be undertaken in 1996 within the resources available; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9630/96]

Allocations in respect of youth services for 1996 are currently being finalised in my Department. The increased level of funding made available this year enables consideration of a number of initiatives, in addition to allowing some scope for increased grant-in-aid to voluntary youth organisations under the youth service grant scheme. Of particular concern in this regard is the possibility of developing additional community-based projects for young people in disadvantaged areas. Other areas for consideration include enhancement of existing disadvantaged projects and extension and upgrading of the network of youth information centres. I hope to be in a position to approve the allocations shortly.
