Vol. 465 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Unemployment Statistics.

John O'Leary

Question:

4 Mr. O'Leary asked the Taoiseach the number of persons registered as unemployed in each town in County Kerry, including Kenmare town and rural district, on the latest date for which figures are available; and the comparative figure for 1995. [9314/96]

The information requested by the Deputy is contained in a statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report. Since February 1993, those on the live register in Kenmare have been included in the Tralee total.

Number of persons on the live register in each unemployment office in County Kerry, on 26 April 1996 and 28 April 1995:

26 April 1996

28 April 1995

Caherciveen

551

452

Dingle

150

161

Killarney

1,526

1,530

Killorglin

743

725

Listowel

1,591

1,618

Tralee

4,895

4,265

Total County Kerry

9,456

8,751

In the light of these figures, does the Minister of State accept that the time has come to set in place a task force similar to the one set in place in Tallaght and Tuam in recent times with a view to tackling the serious unemployment problem in the towns mentioned? Does he further accept——

I cannot help the Deputy now. This question is essentially statistical and matters of policy do not arise at this juncture. The Deputy should raise the matter at some other time.

The Deputy knows that.

I am trying to point to the inconsistency in the Government's approach.
