Vol. 465 No. 4

Written Answers. - Law on Bail.

Donal Moynihan

Question:

24 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Justice when a referendum on bail will be held. [9758/96]

Ivor Callely

Question:

29 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the considerations, if any, that have been given to possible changes in the law on bail; the progress, if any, that has been made in respect of this matter; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9724/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 24 and 29 together.

I have concluded my examination of the Law Reform Commission report on the law of bail and I am at present consulting with my colleagues in Government on detailed proposals arising from that examination.

The House will appreciate that the issues involved are extremely complex and I cannot say precisely when the Government's deliberations will be concluded. I can, however, assure the House that there will be no undue delay and that the Government is determined to bring forward measures which will address effectively and comprehensively the problem of offending on bail.
