Vol. 465 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dublin-Monaghan Bombings.

Mary Harney

Question:

58 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Justice her most recent response to the requests by the relatives of the Dublin-Monaghan bombing victims in view of undertakings given by her in October 1995 arising out of the RTE "Prime Time" broadcast of May 1995; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9784/96]

Michael McDowell

Question:

133 Mr. M. McDowell asked the asked the Minister for Justice the steps, if any, she has taken in recent times in relation to investigating and publishing the circumstances of the Dublin and Monaghan bombings of 17 May 1974; and whether her Department now regards the matter as closed; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10017/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 58 and 133 together. On foot of the undertakings referred to in Question No. 58, I informed the relatives of the victims — as well as Deputy Harney and other Members of this House — by way of letters dated 29 February 1996 that the Garda authorities were satisfied from their assessment of the "Prime Time" broadcast of May 1995 that no new evidence or witness had been identified which would provide a basis for further Garda investigation.

I am assured by the Garda authorities that the Garda investigation file on the 1974 Dublin and Monaghan bombings will continue to remain open and that any new leads will be actively pursued.
