Vol. 465 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Recreation Hall.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

214 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has for a recreation hall at St. McCartan's College, Moneraile, County Monaghan; when funding will be made available; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10442/96]

An application from St. McCartan's College Sports Hall Committee under my Department's major facilities programme has been received in the sports section of my Department. The application is for grant-aid towards the provision of a multi-purpose hall.

The position in relation to school sports facilities is that, in general, school projects are not eligible for national lottery funding under the recreational facilities scheme or under the major facilities programme. However, a limited number of school sports facilities have been assisted under these schemes where the project was undertaken by a local community group in co-operation with school authorities. One of the conditions of these schemes is that the completed facility must be available to all sections of the community.

This application will be considered under the terms of the schemes, subject to the funds available, when decisions are being made on future grant allocations.
