Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 20 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Joe Walsh — the need for the Minister for Education to have arrangements made for an architect to visit a school (details supplied) in County Cork so that an assessment can be made of the dangerous condition of the school and an immediate programme of necessary improvements can be put in train; (2) Deputy Batt O'Keeffe — the danger to staff in University Hospital, Cork, from radiation in the cancer treatment unit and the action the Minister for Health proposes to take in this regard; (3) Deputy Ring — the need to resolve the school transport problem at Newport, County Mayo, by maintaining the current level of service to Westport; (4) Deputy Shortall — the need to tackle illegal drug dealers by establishing a special unit involving the Garda Síochána, the Revenue Commissioners and the Department of Social Welfare; (5) Deputy Broughan — the need to reexamine the provision of resources for orthodontic dental care on the north side of Dublin; (6) Deputy Ellis — the delay in the provision of sewerage schemes for the villages of Dromod, Drumsna and Jamestown, County Leitrim; (7) Deputy Séamus Brennan — the measures that the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications has taken to ensure that the second mobile telephone operator delivers good coverage; (8) Deputy Michael Kitt — the question of allocating some of the teaching posts which have been made available by falling pupil and teacher numbers in primary schools to improve the pupil/teacher ratio and to reduce class size; (9) Deputy Ó Cuív — an gá atá ann go gcuirfear áiseanna breise ar fáil ag Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiaráin ar an gCeathrú Rua, Contae na Gaillimhe, agus freisin go ndéanfar an scoil a athchóiriú go hiomlán, lena chur in oiriúint don líon scoláirí atá ag freastal ar an scoil seo anois; (10) Deputy Quill — the present position in relation to the retention of history and geography as core subjects in the junior certificate curriculum; (11) Deputy Eric Byrne — the need to ensure that sentencing policy is consistent in view of a recent case in which an individual convicted of stealing goods with a total value of £31 was sentenced to five years in prison; (12) Deputy Hugh Byrne — the policy implications for the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry arising from the cessation of research, which was specifically dedicated to organic farming, at the State's only research facility for organic farming; (13) Deputy O'Dea — the urgent need to examine the financing and organisation of the courts in view of the deliberations of the committee chaired by Mrs Justice Susan Denham; (14) Deputy Lawlor — the intentions of the Government regarding the legalisation of gambling casinos and gaming facilities in view of public disquiet following a recent planning decision which included proposals for the construction of a casino and having regard to the negative social consequences as evidenced in other jurisdictions; (15) Deputy McDaid — the urgent need for funding for the development of a community and PE hall on the site of Raphoe vocational school, County Donegal; (16) Deputy Martin — the need for the Department of Education to have discussions with the Office of the Public Works to ensure that students of the National Colleges of Art and Design can remain in the current premises at Leinster Lane, Dublin 2, until the extension to the main campus at Thomas Street has been completed; (17) Deputy Lynch — the effects on the work of FÁS community employment schemes of recent changes in the eligibility criteria for such schemes with particular reference to the many arts-based schemes currently in operation and the effects on the employment prospects of those working in the arts; (18) Deputy Cullen — public concern regarding the proposed location of the new sewage treatment plant at Tramore, County Waterford, and the insistance of the Department of the Environment on the location despite deep concern expressed by the Department of the Marine; (19) Deputy Andrews — the serious miscarriage of justice in the case of a person (details supplied) who was convicted of a crime in Britain which he did not commit; (20) Deputy Briscoe — the disturbance and disruption caused to students by the transfer of the art education annex of the National College of Art and Design from its premises on Leinster Lane, Dublin 2, to a temporary site at the Carysfort complex.

The matters raised by Deputies Cullen, O'Dea, Hugh Byrne and Séamus Brennan have been selected for discussion.
