Question:

89 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance whether he has had meetings with casino promoters and operators: if so, the number of such meetings; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10298/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 87, 88 and 89 together.

As I have previously indicated to the House, the Government has asked my Department to prepare a report, in consultation with the other Government Departments and agencies involved, on the pros and cons of licensing casino gaming.

The bodies involved are considering such matters as the social aspects of casino gaming, the revenue implications and the possible regulatory framework. Should a decision to allow casino gaming be taken, legislation would be necessary and this is also one of the matters being considered by the group.

The Deputy will appreciate that until both I and the Government have had an opportunity to give consideration to the matter generally, the question of examination of individual casino proposals does not arise.
