Vol. 466 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

163 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education her views on whether 25 year old buses which have had their MOTs passed by the companies to which they belong are safe for transporting school children; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11098/96]

I can assure the Deputy that all vehicles used in the school transport scheme meet all statutory regulations as required by the Department of the Environment.

Vehicles nominated for use under the scheme must be suitable for the conveyance of school children and must have current documentation as required in law.

Vehicles operated by Bus Éireann and private contractors are subject to an annual roadworthiness check and to regular inspection in order to ensure a safe and reliable service for transporting school children.

Question:

164 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education whether parents are entitled to gain access to insurance information in relation to the travel requirements for school buses; whether a standard criteria sheet should issue; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11103/96]

Parents would not be entitled to gain access to specific information on insurance of school transport vehicles since such information is confidential between bus contractors and their insurance companies. It is a legal requirement that all such vehicles carry current motor insurance.

Bus Éireann carries its own insurance which covers all Bus Éireann vehicles operating under the school transport scheme.
In addition, Bus Éireann employs a broker to check directly with insurance companies the adequacy of insurance cover on all contractors' vehicles.
In the circumstances, I do not believe that the issue of a standard criteria sheet on insurance information for school buses is warranted.
